HPC.NRW organizes courses and workshops for HPC users in NRW.

With regard to the targeted training for HPC users, our user survey primarily indicated a need for introductions to the usage of HPC clusters as well as methods for performance profiling and optimization.

The online tutorials and materials are published via the HPC Wiki.

Introduction to Linux in HPC

This comprehensive, general introduction to Linux covers basic topics such as the command line, the directory structure, files, user permissions, processes, the VIM text editor, shell scripting, environment variables, SSH connections and data transfers. The separation to individual videos also enables more advanced users to watch again easily and conveniently if, for example, they have forgotten how to use VIM.

Gprof Tutorial

This tutorial is specifically about the topic of performance analysis of applications with the GNU profiler Gprof. It is shown how to instrument applications, generate performance information about an application run and finally evaluate it. In addition, an option is provided for visualizing the application structure using call graphs and how the application's source code can be annotated with runtime information. Three real-world examples from the fields of biology, computer science, and mechanical engineering demonstrate that Gprof works for different programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Fortran), different compilers (GNU, Intel) and even parallel applications (threads, MPI).

OpenMP in Small Bites

This course is initially aimed at beginners and in later parts also for advanced users for the shared memory parallelization using OpenMP programming. The concepts are taught in bits and pieces in a total of 11 parts and cover the topics of worksharing, data scoping, tasking and non-uniform memory access.
