HPC.NRW at IT-PRIME

Presenting the Competence Network at the University of Cologne

As part of the lecture series “IT PRIME – IT Projects in Research, Infrastructure and Modern Education”, HPC.NRW was invited to the University of Cologne to provide insights into the current developments of the statewide competence network for high-performance computing. The series regularly features key IT projects that significantly shape research, teaching, and infrastructure, and offers an open space for exchange, questions, and networking.

The presentation offered a comprehensive overview of HPC.NRW – from the project's strategic goals and the existing HPC infrastructure in North Rhine-Westphalia to the structure and working methods of its various work packages. Topics included the statewide collaboration between participating universities, joint service offerings for researchers, and the continuous development of the HPC landscape in NRW.

The talk was given by Roland Pabel, coordinator of Work Package 3 “Operational Cooperation”, who outlined the role of HPC.NRW within the state’s digital research infrastructure and demonstrated how coordinated structures, knowledge exchange, and aligned development efforts create tangible benefits for the scientific community.

The engaged questions and lively discussion following the presentation highlighted the importance of powerful HPC resources and coordinated infrastructure development for research in NRW. Participation in the IT-PRIME lecture series offered a valuable opportunity to present HPC.NRW to a broad audience and to emphasize the significance of collaborative approaches in the HPC domain.
